Reddit Story Video Workflow: From Thread to Upload, One Story Walked Through

A walkthrough of one Reddit-style story video from start to finish — choosing and clearing the story, rewriting it into a 60-second script, picking the visual treatment, voicing and captioning it, rendering, and uploading — with the decisions that matter at each step.

Most guides to Reddit story videos stop at "paste the post into a text-to-speech tool and put Minecraft parkour behind it". That is how you get a channel that sounds like every other channel, and it is the version platforms are least willing to pay for.

This walkthrough follows one story from the thread to the upload, so you can see the decisions that actually change the result. To keep it clean, the story here is one we wrote ourselves in the familiar "am I wrong" style; the workflow is the same for a real post you have permission to use.

Step 1: Choose the story, then clear it

Our example: a person splits the cost of a holiday rental with four friends, pays the deposit, and finds out two weeks later that one friend quietly invited a partner who is not paying. They ask whether they are wrong to charge the friend the difference.

Why this story works as a video:

  • A conflict a viewer can judge in one sentence. Comment sections on story videos are driven by "who was wrong", so a clear question matters.
  • A turning point. The discovery two weeks later is the beat the video builds towards.
  • An update. Stories with a follow-up give you a natural part two.

Now the part most channels skip. A public post belongs to the person who wrote it, and being visible on Reddit is not a licence to republish it. Message the author and ask, or write original stories inspired by the format, as we did here. Either way, strip out real usernames, locations and anything that could identify the people involved.

Step 2: Rewrite it into a script

A Reddit post is written to be read. A story video is listened to. The original post for a story like ours might run 600 words with background about the friend group; the Short needs about 150, because narration runs at roughly 150 words a minute.

Our rewrite kept three things and cut the rest:

  1. The hook, rewritten as a question: "I paid the deposit for five people. Six showed up. Am I wrong for sending one of them a bill?"
  2. The facts in order: the split, the discovery, the conversation.
  3. The question back to the viewer as the last line.

Everything else — how long they had been friends, what the rental looked like — went. If you would rather start from a draft, the AI Script Writer takes a topic and a target length and returns a hook plus line-by-line narration sized to it, which you then edit into your own words.

Read the final script out loud once. Any line you have to take a breath in the middle of is too long.

Step 3: Decide the visual treatment

This is where most Reddit channels look identical, so it is worth a real decision.

Option A: background footage. The classic look: gameplay or satisfying loops behind big captions. It is fast and the format is familiar, but it gives viewers nothing to remember you by. Only use footage you own or are licensed to use.

Option B: illustrated scenes. The story is shown, not just read. For a story with recurring people — the friend who invited a partner, the narrator, the group chat — a cartoon treatment where each person keeps the same face in every scene makes the video feel like an episode rather than a reading. Tools such as toonbeeai.net take a script and turn it into a narrated cartoon video with the same character in every scene, which suits this kind of story well.

For our example we stayed with Option A for the Short and kept Option B in mind for the longer cut, because the six-person cast is easier to follow when you can see them.

Step 4: Voice, captions and pacing

Three settings did most of the work:

  • Voice. A calm, slightly dry voice suits a "was I wrong" story better than a dramatic one. Viewers are judging the narrator; an over-acted voice makes them side against it.
  • Captions. Large, high-contrast, a few words at a time. Many people watch Shorts and TikTok with the sound off, so the captions carry the story for them.
  • Duration. We set 60 seconds and made the script fit, rather than letting a long script decide the length.

Step 5: Build it in the editor

On Faceless Reels, the Reddit story video generator currently runs on the Brainrot MOV workspace, and it is worth being clear about what that means today. You paste the story text in and edit it there; you can assign character roles and voices, choose a caption style, pick a background preset or upload your own footage, add music, and render a 9:16 video. Pasting a Reddit URL and generating editable post and comment cards are on the roadmap but not live yet, so for now the story goes in as text.

Two habits that save renders:

  • Check the price on the Generate button first. It shows the exact credit cost of the video before anything is charged.
  • Preview before you queue a batch. Fix the voice and caption style on the first video, then reuse those settings for the rest of the series.

Step 6: Add a recap card for the numbers

Our story has numbers in it: a five-way split, a sixth guest, a difference to pay. Viewers argue about those numbers in the comments, so showing them on screen for three seconds helps — a simple animated breakdown of who paid what before the final question.

You can build that card by hand in any editor with keyframes. Tools for this are also appearing: AIBroll, currently in development with a waitlist open, is being built to read a script and animate it with kinetic type for key lines and animated charts for every number. Whatever you use, keep the card short and let the narration keep moving over it.

Step 7: Upload, then repurpose

Before uploading:

  • Write a title that asks the question, not one that gives away the ending.
  • Label the video as AI-generated where the platform asks you to. Narration from an AI voice and synthetic visuals are worth disclosing when in doubt.
  • Check the first frame. On Shorts and TikTok it is effectively your thumbnail.

After uploading: the update is your next video. If the story has a follow-up, make it a part two and link the two together; it is the easiest returning-viewer win in this format.

Once you have a handful of stories, a longer compilation for regular YouTube gives the same stories a second life with more watch time. If you want those long-form story videos generated as narrated scenes rather than stitched together from background loops, ViewMax Studio produces story videos where long-form narration is cut into scenes, alongside its short-form output.

What changed between the first draft and the upload

Looking back at the example, the biggest improvements came from steps that had nothing to do with the tool:

  • The post went from roughly 600 words to about 150.
  • The hook became a question the viewer could answer.
  • Identifying details were removed.
  • The visual treatment was chosen on purpose instead of by default.

That is what makes a Reddit story channel feel like a channel. The Reddit story video generator handles the voice, captions, background, music and render, so the time you save goes into choosing better stories and writing better hooks.
